Our story so far

All of this began in 2019 when two friends launched an initiative to develop a framework for environmentally friendly travel in Northeast India. We traveled around the region, getting our hands (and feet) dirty on the roofs of wooden boats that crossed the powerful Bramhaputra, from steep climbs near the Indo-Bhutan order to the high hills of Arunachal to the severe heat of the islands of Majuli. We talked about how tourism can benefit the people while we cooked and ate with them and got to know them. From the Assamese planters to the (former) head-hunters of Nagaland, from one thriving state capital to another, and from one tribal community to another. We thus established a network of people who are the greatest local experts - those who understand the customs, culture, and history of the area, and who can predict the arrival of rain by observing the sky (instead of searching up the weather online). Zemu Gangtok is the result of our desire to provide a hub for travelers in the most ideal area. A location created by travelers, for travelers. Reasonably priced, but clean and comfy enough. And we made it much more enjoyable.

Despite being established in 2020, actual activities didn't begin until April 1, 2021, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic's initial wave. The past three years have also been somewhat hectic. A few figures that we compiled from the data in our booking system are shown above. We have not yet measured several other elements of Zemu Gangtok in addition to the numbers. establishing a sustainable travel industry. We have taken a simplistic approach:

  • Maximum effect on local economy (and society)
  • Minimum effect on the environment

We took the following initiatives to work towards our goal:

  • Employ local workforce
  • Source local products
  • Recycle and re-use natural materials
  • Recycle waste and water
  • Promote local businesses and products to the travellers
  • Promote public transport and shared trips
  • Encourage more travellers to team up and rent Motorcycles
  • Encourage travellers to visit remote locations and stay at village homestays

Ultimately, we aim to spread the word about traveling with appreciation to everyone. When you travel to a new place, show gratitude and respect for the locals and their culture. That, in our opinion, is the main goal of responsible travel.

We welcome your feedback, ideas and suggestions. Do write to us or call us, if you have read this, and have something to add.
